From the kashi yatra to the tying of the thaali, South Indian weddings are rich with ritual. Knowing the sequence is the difference between capturing and missing the moment.
Bangalore is home to every South Indian community — Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayali — and each brings its own rituals, sequence and significance. A photographer who does not know the order will miss the moments that matter most. Here is our approach.
The morning belongs to the haldi, the mehndi, and the getting-ready frames. For South Indian weddings, the kashi yatra — where the groom playfully threatens to leave for pilgrimage — is a moment of pure joy that we always position ourselves for.
The tying of the thaali (or mangalsutra) is the single most important frame of a South Indian Hindu wedding. It happens in seconds. We use two angles — one wide for context, one tight on the hands — so the moment is never missed. The saptapadi, the seven steps around the sacred fire, follows, and we move with the couple through each step.
Bangalore has a large Christian community, and church weddings have their own rhythm — the procession, the exchange of rings, the lighting of the unity candle, the first kiss as a married couple. We coordinate with the church on where photographers are permitted to stand, so we are close without being intrusive.
The reception, the family blessings, the first dance. This is where candid photography shines — the relief and joy after the formality of the ceremony. We stay through the vidaai, the moment that almost always produces the most emotional frames of the day.
Whatever your community and rituals, we take the time to learn them before the day. Tell us about your ceremony and we will come prepared.
